High-Integrity Pressure Protection System (HIPPS)
INTRODUCTION
It is a kind of safety system that is designed and installed to prevent over-pressurization of any oil and gas processing facility or wellhead surface facility. It senses the high pressure and gives input to the system for safe shutdown in case of the pressure increment beyond the high setpoint. This way the loss of primary containment or LOPC scenario is avoided. Generally, it is installed on the gas process line having high pressure.
The control loop for this over-pressurization protection security is provided in below picture:
HIPPS: The HIPPS
system is mostly implemented using the
SIS system provided by the OEM like HIMA H41Q/H51Q or DeltaV SIS with having
controller the ESD/SIS cabinet. Dedicated HIPPS Marshalling Cabinets are also provided
for electronics marshaling containing Hiquad Controllers or CSLSs and CHARMs
baseplates for all HIPPS
IO’s. HIPPS cabinets can be located in the centralized control room or have
its location close to the wellhead surface facility for I/O interface.
